Convert CSV to TurboTax TXF File Format

If you are looking for a solution to take your downloaded transactions from your broker and import them into TurboTax this may be your lucky day.

I needed to do that a few years ago to complete my taxes. I made a substantial number of trades, many more than I wanted to enter manually into TurboTax. Unfortunately, TurboTax doesn't support a common file type like .csv. So I developed a conversion utility and put it online.

Convert .CSV to .TXF

Start by selecting your .CSV file with the browse button and click convert. Then select "save to file" when prompted.

Your CSV file should have the following columns in this EXACT order:
Symbol, Quantity, Opening Date, Opening Net Amount, Closing Date, Closing Net Amount
Note: You can use Excel, Google Docs or OpenOffice to reorder columns and save as .csv if the conversion fails.  Also make sure you save as a CSV file with a .csv file extension.

Last Update: 1/7/2012 - More flexability in handling CSV encodings

Background: I came across quite a few places to purchase a CSV to TXF converters but, they were expensive. After looking at the spec on TurboTax I thought I'd try creating my own. In a releatively short amount of time I created this conversion utility on my website. You are free to use this page to create your own TXF files for your IRS Schedule-D to import into TurboTax.

As it is free I make no warranty that it is without error and will not be held liable for any incorrect data. If you run into any problems contact me. If I have time I'll look into fixing any errors. This site has been is wide use for a few years now and I've received many positive comments which are always appreciated.
